DOOMSDAY PREPPERS FACTS

  • The United States uses an average of 19,148,000 barrels of oil a day

  • While the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve houses the largest stockpile of government-owned crude oil in the world -- a staggering 727 million barrels -- if the US were cut off from foreign oil, this reserve would last less than 38 days.

  • The Earth’s Magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century.

  • There are more than 12,000 earthquakes recorded each year, varying in destructiveness from minor to catastrophic.

  • The most devastating earthquake in recorded history occurred in Central China in the 16th Century. It killed over 800,000 people and some think it may have even tipped 8.0 on the Richter Scale.

  • On December 26, 2004 Sumatra experienced an Earthquake so powerful, 9.1 on the Richter Scale, that it actually shortened the length of the day by 6.8 microseconds and changed the rotation of the Earth’s axis by 7 centimeters.

  • The magnetic north pole was first located in 1831 by James Ross, the trip took 4 full years. In 1904 Roald Amundsen make his own trip to find the pole only to realize that it had moved 50KM since Ross’s discovery.

  • The Oil Depletion Analysis Center has estimated that since commercial drilling began in the mid 19th century nearly humans have used as much as a trillion barrels of crude oil.

  • In 2001 the price for a gallon of gasoline jumped from $1.56 to $3.37.

  • The first seismoscope, an instrument used to measure movements of the earths crust, was invented in 132 AD by Chang Hêng. The device, which resembled a large wine vessel, had 8 dragons each facing one of the primary directions of the compass, each with a ball in its mouth. Below each dragon was a matching toad with an open mouth. When the device sensed an earthquake the dragon pointing the direction the quake originated would drop its ball.

  • The theory of true polar wander postulates that over time the redistribution of weight on the surface of the earth, (i.e. the continents moving, volcanoes erupting, ice fields melting and reforming elsewhere) eventually cause the Earth’s rotational axis to change. While some are afraid this will affect modern life the process happens gradually and would take millions of years to complete.

  • FEMA recommends that in the event of an emergency one of the most important steps is keeping a full tank of gas in your car, or having an alternative means of getting out of town. They also recommend having a basic supply of emergency rations as in the event of a major disaster basic necessities will be unavailable.

  • Saudi Arabia produces the most oil of any country in the world at an astonishing 9 million barrels a day.

  • There are over 500,000 detectable earthquakes each year, of that 100,000 can be felt, and only 100 cause actual damage.

  • According to a study at UC Davis we will run out of oil 100 years before a viable alternative energy source is developed, if current trends continue.

  • To the consumer, the average cost of a complete MRE meal is comparable to that of a trip to the drive-in window at McDonalds. However, the MRE is easily the healthier meal.

  • Since about 1997, MRE cases have also included something called a TTI (time and temperature indicator) on the outside of the box to assist inspectors in determining if MREs are still good.

  • The Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 required ammunition manufacturers and dealers to be licensed and keep records of sales. The act also prohibited mail-order transactions.

  • Yellowstone Park - is one of the largest super volcanoes in the world. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago.

  • The term "super volcano" implies an eruption of magnitude 8 on the Volcano Explosively Index, meaning that more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (250 cubic miles) of magma (partially molten rock) are erupted.

  • The super volcanic crater at Yellowstone is over 80 kilometers long by 45 kilometers wide - large enough to hold the world's biggest city, Tokyo (population 18 million).

  • The disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March released far more radiation than the Japanese government has claimed

  • Researcher, Boris Borisov, in his article titled “The American Famine” estimated the victims of the financial crisis in the US are at over seven million people.

  • The financial crisis in the United States has been compared to 1932-1933 with Holodomor, or Famine, in the USSR during 1932-1933.

  • According to Fema’s evacuation planning steps in order to get out of harms way you may need to go north, south, east or west. Pick a destination in each direction.

  • David Eddies invented the term Y2K in June 1995.  It was so feared that Clinton even signed the Y2K Act in 1999 to limit the government’s liability.

  • The U.S. has 8.48 million miles of roadway.

  • Congestion causes an extra 4.8 billion hours of travel times on U.S. Highways.

  • In 2008 Americans traveled a total of 5.5 trillion miles.

  • The computer virus stuxnet has been show to be able to unlock computer controlled locks in prisons.

  • Annual flu viruses infect 20% of Americans, hospitalize 200,000, and kill about 36,000.

  • The Spanish flu killed more Americans in one year than WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam combined.

  • Each year, an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of flu-related complications.

  • Researchers estimate that if everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year could be prevented.

  • Florida had almost 1.5 billion dollars in flood damage from 1978 to 2011.

  • Flash floods are the leading cause of weather related deaths in the United States, at almost 200 a year.
