DESCRIPTION

After a suicide bomber posing as a truck driver detonates a bomb vest at the Leatherneck truck entrance, the situation is tense.  See life inside Camp Leatherneck: Helmand Province, the largest Marine base in Afghanistan and a makeshift home for 7,000 US troops.

In January 2009 it was a patch of lawless Afghan desert riddled with Taliban fighters. The Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade stationed at Camp Leatherneck had just under two months left in their deployment. As Marines battle complacency, Ramadan comes to an end and insurgent activity multiplies. Tensions mount in the face of increased rocket and mortar attacks. Yet in spite of this, everyday Marines carry out their missions. What the Marines don't know is that this will turn out to be one of the deadliest months yet for US forces in the eight year long Afghan War.
