I Escaped a Cult is a journey into the dark side of mind control, deception, fear, and intimidation as it explores the destructive experience of life inside two dangerous cults. Brent Jeffs is born into the breakaway polygamous Mormon group, the FLDS, or Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a sect ruled with an iron fist by his uncle Warren Jeffs. Brent tells of his harrowing experience living in a world ruled by fear and where having three mothers and twenty siblings is normal. Ex-hippie Maura Schmierer and her daughter Rebekah reveal the confronting lives they lived inside Aggressive Christianity Mission Training Corps, where they say Lila and Jim Green rule their followers with fear and abuse. Mother and daughter tell how members of "God's Army," are forced to beat their children regularly, talk in tongues and blindly obey the cult's leadership.
