March 11, 2004: Madrid Subway Attacks – Islamic terrorists detonate 10 bombs hidden in sports bags on four packed commuter trains at the height of the morning rush hour killing 191 and wounding 1,700.
July 22, 2004: The 9/11 Commission releases its final report which becomes an instant best-seller. It is heralded as “one of the most riveting, disturbing and revealing accounts of crime, espionage and the inner workings of government ever written.”
November 2, 2008: George W. Bush is re-elected for a second term as president.
July 7, 2005: 7/7 London Underground Attacks – Three terrorists simultaneously detonate bombs on three separate subway trains at 8:50 AM. An hour later, a fourth terrorist sets off a bomb aboard a double-decker bus. The attacks kill 56 people including the four bombers.
April 27, 2006: Ground on the new One World Trade Centre is broken.
August 9, 2006: Trans-Atlantic Aircraft “Liquid Bomb” Plot thwarted – British, American and Pakistani intelligence operatives arrest 24 members of a London-based al-Qaeda cell plotting to simultaneously detonate bombs disguised as beverages on at least seven passenger flights bound for the United States and Canada. The plot had the potential to be three times as deadly as the September 11th attacks of 2001.
November 26-29, 2008: Mumbai Siege – Ten Muslim militants from Pakistan open fire at the Chhatrapati Shivaji railroad station, a café, a Jewish community centre and two luxury hotels in a highly-coordinated three-day terrorist siege, killing 173 people. Indian security forces killed all but one of the terrorists, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, who was sentenced to death in May of 2010.
November 5, 2009: Fort Hood Attack – Army psychiatrist, Nidal Malik Hasan began shooting an automatic pistol and another weapon inside a crowded medical processing centre for soldiers returning from or about to be sent overseas at the Fort Hood Army Base in Killeen, Texas Military. Hasan killed 12 service members and one civilian employee and wounded over 30 others. It is the deadliest attack on an American military base in history and the worst terror attack on American soil since 9/11.
September 19, 2009: New York Subway Plot – Najibullah Zazi is charged with planning a suicide attack on New York City’s subway system.
May 1, 2010: Times Square Attempt – Naturalized U.S. citizen from Pakistan, Faisal Shahzad, is arrested on a Dubai-bound airliner at John F. Kennedy International Airport for attempting to detonate a car bomb made from gasoline, propane, firecrackers and alarm clocks in Times Square.
December 25, 2009: Christmas Day bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, boards Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas morning with a bomb sewn into his underpants, but the bomb fails to ignite and Abdulmutallab is apprehended by passengers and crew.
May 1, 2011: Osama bin Laden is killed by U.S. special operations forces in Abbotabad, Pakistan home to a large Pakistani military base and a Pakistani military academy.
June 30, 2011: Remaining U.S. troops scheduled to withdraw from Iraqi cities.
September 11, 2011: A memorial to those killed in the 9/11 attacks consisting of two massive pools set within the footprints of the Twin Towers and the names of those killed is scheduled to open at Ground Zero. A museum is scheduled to open in 2012.
