The largest recycling centre in the entire USA sits in a suburb of New Jersey.
Dedicated only to the City of New York, this mega plant hosts a team of huge machines - from mighty shredders to giant ballistic separators that handle everything from plastic bottles to unwanted city buses.
A stream of barges delivers re-usable trash from the city streets to the plant every day. It’s running to an unforgiving capacity and on an enormous scale…but it’s still not big enough.
So, a few miles away a replacement site is rising from the edge of the Hudson River.
The construction is taking place on an abandoned pier in Brooklyn, but the challenges of getting this structure up to strength to handle the plant are nothing compared to the challenges of designing and creating the massive machinery that will be installed to handle the job.
