After Poland was effectively wiped off the map by the Germans in the west and the Soviets in the east during WWII, the Poles were liberated following the Battle of Barbarossa. The Polish people rallied to join the Allied forces fighting in Italy, becoming instrumental in one of the bloodiest battles of the war at Monte Cassino.
