Synopsis
The Straits Born, also known as the Peranakan, were the privileged elite on the Malay Archipelago for half a millennium. They descended from inter-marriages between foreign traders and local women, and formed a unique cultural identity of their own. Historian and anthropologist, Julian Davison begins his journey in Malacca, Malaysia - the birthplace of Peranakan culture. In search of the Straits Born, Julian also travels to Penang, Phuket and Singapore, where the Peranakan communities flourished.
