Synopsis

Apocalypse tells the story of WWII by using provocative footage taken by amateur filmmakers, declassified/Top Secret footage and newsreel footage that was not used at the time. This rediscovered footage has been colourised to give viewers a sense of what it was like to experience the war first hand. The strength of the series lies in the attempt to tell the story of WWII in a new way, using atypical footage in a way that audiences have never seen before. For example: episode 2 includes footage of French school children in a little village near the Ardennes. It's their last day of school before the village is abandoned and the Germans storm through. Then, viewers see footage of the same abandoned classroom - eerily emptied of its students. This kind of footage provides a civilian or "real life" perspective of the war.
