MILEVA MARIĆ

Albert Einstein met his first wife, Mileva Marić, at Zurich Polytechnic, where she was the only female studying physics in her class. He considered her his intellectual equal and their letters often combine sweet nothings with scientific theory. They married in 1903 and had two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard, and a daughter, Lieserl, who died as an infant. Passionate and driven, but also brooding and increasingly gloomy, Mileva triumphed over many, but not all, of the obstacles that then faced an aspiring female physicist. The couple separated in 1914 and finalized their divorce in 1919.
