    +

Explosives And Emeralds, Season 1 | Episode 6

On the fringes of Zambia's industrial 'Copperbelt' is a vein of some of the richest emeralds in the world. But the area is notoriously filled with illegal mining and smuggling. To protect this rich gem fields the whole area is secured by armed guards within a cordoned off military zone. Sentries with AK47's control checkpoints and hold a curfew - not letting anyone in or out after six in the evening. The Mine Kings venture into these African bad-lands to find a small scale mine that could produce the clearest and purest of emeralds, known as 'Hamish' - a local name meaning as clear as water. But there's a reason emeralds are so expensive. The best ones are rare and hard to mine. Many have tried and failed. To find Zambia's Hamish emeralds the Mine Kings must dig deeper and remove more earth than they have ever done before. To do that ex-army mechanic Zak must get a community excavator that has been out of action and neglected for years up and running. Something his skillset is more than capable of. Once the digger is in action it tests Jimmy's excavator skills to the limit and a wall collapse almost crashes the excavator and Jimmy along with it, into the mine. Digging deeper and removing much more mud than they ever could by hand, they get closer and closer to the emerald layer. Fred is convinced the signs are good. They are on track. And when the bucket of the digger stops scooping mud and suddenly hits hard rock they think they are almost there. But the rock cannot be penetrated by the digger. Now it is up to John and Fred to use explosives to break through the rock. Guy Clutterbuck's team has less than a week to help make this small scale emerald mine productive - but can they do it? It's an immense challenge that risks life and limb and a physical endurance test that pushes the team to their limits as they hunt for Zambia's Hamish emeralds.
