Synopsis

Photographer Thomas Heaton embarks on a memorable journey along the newly-constructed China-Laos railway. From tea pickers in Yunnan, who preserve traditions of an ancient trading route, to young monks in Luang Prabang balancing spiritual practices with contemporary life, Thomas captures people, traditions, and the pulse of daily life.

    The photographer begins his journey through Yunnan, the cultural crossroads of southwest China. From a bustling market in Kunming to the main starting point of the ancient Tea-Horse Road in Pu’er, he encounters ancient trading routes, spectacular landscapes and modern trade.

    After crossing into Laos, the photographer discovers a land of timeless traditions. In Luang Namtha, Khmu villagers welcome him to share rice husking, fishing, and meals. Further south in Luang Prabang, he sees golden temples and modern railways as part of a nation balancing change with tradition.

    On the final leg of his journey, the photographer explores Vang Vieng, once a backpacker haven now reinvented through eco-tourism and hot-air ballooning. His journey culminates at the Rocket Festival, where ancient ritual meets modern spectacle.
