Breaking off from mainland Africa 160 million years ago, refugee animals cast adrift on natural rafts arrived on the tropical shores of Madagascar. Isolated from the mainland, coupled with a wide range of climates, evolution went into overdrive. Of almost a quarter of a million species found on the island, approximately 70 percent are unique.
